Mikel Arteta has reached an agreement over an improved new contract with Premier League champions Arsenal, extending his future at the Emirates after months of negotiations.
Mikel Arteta has agreed a new and improved contract with Arsenal as the club moves to secure the future of the manager who led them back to the Premier League title.
Arteta's existing deal is due to expire at the end of the current season, but negotiations over an extension have been taking place for several months.
BBC Sport reports that a final agreement has now been reached between Arteta and Arsenal.
Reuters subsequently reported the agreement, citing the BBC report, while noting that Arsenal had not yet provided an official response at the time of publication.
Arteta set to extend Arsenal stay
The exact duration of the new contract has not been officially confirmed in the BBC reporting.
However, the agreement is expected to keep Arteta at Arsenal into at least his 10th year with the club.
The Spaniard was appointed Arsenal manager in December 2019 and has overseen a major transformation of the team.
Last season, Arsenal won their first Premier League title in 22 years after finishing runners-up in each of the previous three campaigns.
Improved terms for Arsenal manager
BBC Sport reports that the agreement includes a significant increase on Arteta's current financial package.
Arteta had made his desire to remain at Arsenal clear during negotiations, saying recently that supporters did not need to worry about his future and that he was extremely happy at the club.
The agreement provides Arsenal with greater stability as they attempt to build on last season's title success.
Further details, including the final length of the contract, are expected when the agreement is formally announced.
