Italy international Daniel Maldini had his driving licence suspended after a car crash in Milan, with breath tests showing he was over Italy's legal alcohol limit.
Daniel Maldini had his driving licence suspended following a road traffic accident in Milan in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The Cagliari midfielder was involved in a collision involving two vehicles at around 5:15am in Via Caracciolo in northern Milan.
According to Reuters and Italian news agency ANSA, six people were involved in the incident and suffered only minor injuries. Maldini was taken to hospital for checks before later being discharged.
Maldini was over the legal alcohol limit
Police carried out two breathalyser tests following the crash.
The tests reportedly recorded alcohol levels of 0.91 g/l and 0.89 g/l, above Italy's legal limit of 0.5 g/l.
His driving licence was subsequently suspended.
ANSA reported that Maldini had been driving a Porsche Carrera and that investigators were working to establish the full circumstances of the collision.
Cagliari says toxicology tests were negative
Separate reports emerged following the accident regarding toxicology testing.
Cagliari later issued a statement saying Maldini had undergone toxicology tests and that all tests carried out had returned negative results.
ANSA reported that the tests publicised by Maldini and Cagliari were conducted separately from checks ordered by Milan's local police following the accident, with the results of those police-ordered tests still awaited at the time of its report.
Maldini returned to Cagliari training following the incident.
Incident came hours after Cagliari win
The crash occurred only hours after Maldini had scored the decisive penalty in Cagliari's Serie A victory over Atalanta.
The 24-year-old Italy international joined Cagliari after previous spells with clubs including AC Milan and Atalanta.
He is the son of former AC Milan and Italy captain Paolo Maldini.
